The Obsidian Pebble (The Artefact Series Book 1) by R.A. Jones - 2012 SWBA Winner: Young Adult

From the Sharp Writ Book Awards judges:
  • This was a fantastic book.  Had sort of a Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows feel to it.
  • This book has great characters and a fun story line. I want to read more about Oz Chambers.
  • Although occasionally convoluted and a teensy slow at the start, this is a fabulous YA sci fi / fantasy and mystery.  It was hard to put down and I can't wait until the 2nd of the quartet comes out next!

First, let me say if I could give this book 10 stars, I would. This first book in the Artefact series should have readers of all ages clamoring for more. It's been a while since I've read a kids' book that made me forget it was, indeed, a book written for kids. Rhys A Jones creates just the right mix of haunted house, creepy characters, mystery, fun, dark humor, and a doggone good story to make this book almost impossible to put down. Jones has a way of bringing characters to life that makes readers feel they are part of the story. Adults who read this book aloud to their children will almost certainly find themselves as caught up in the story as their kids. I can't recommend The Obsidian Pebble highly enough and eagerly anticipate the next book in the Artefact series..

  1. Just to let everyone know---since winning, the series has been sold to a publisher and we are re-launching the Obsidian Pebble in October---with the rest to follow annually.

Thanks to everyone who read and judged, and for those of you who want to read it, just be a little bit patient...
